How to Play Better Backgammon
Let's start with the standard opening of classic backgammon.
In this example, your checkers are black, and your opponent's are red. Move leftwards, or you can turn the board up and down and play from left to right, everything is the same.
Your home board area is the part of the backgammon board where you need to move all your checkers. Try to bear off before your rival. In backgammon a player has 24 rows, called points or slots, and 15 checkers, called stones or pieces, per backgammon player. When a checker is alone in a row it's vulnerable and can be hit by your opponent. To prevent this, place at least two checkers in a row to form a block to prevent being hit by your opponent and it also closes the route to your opponent.
The key strategy of the backgammon game is to block all the possible passages of your opponent and keep them not moving while you are freely moving your checkers around the backgammon board. For quick results, form blocks in strategic rows. The most important rows are marked by dark blue.
How you can get the advantage in th backgammon game, and get it fast? The backgammon strategy is to block the six rows from r18 through r23 while your rival's two checkers are still in the r24. Wait until they plays all of the 6 permutations, then open r18 and hope they roll only one 6. If your opponent rolls a double 6 they can escape and will be forced to play one checker while leaving the other unaccompanied in r24. This is the time to hit the checker and make a strong door at r24.
At this point, your home area is blocked, and your opponent is required to wait until you bear off your checkers and open a row for them. Do not leave a blot while you bear off. Backgammon may not a difficult game, but strategic mistakes are not easily forgiven or rectified. Do not rest on your laurels and believe that you are the winner until you bear off your very last checker.
